APPROVED CABLES INITIATIVE
Prysmian is a founding member and spearhead of the Approved Cables Initiative (ACI) launched in March this year. Prysmian has long recognised that the existence of non-approved and fake cables is an important issue for the electrical industry, one that creates major risks for all concerned.
On different occasions, Prysmian and other cable manufacturers have been contacted by installers, clients and wholesalers worried they may have unwittingly taken delivery of sub-standard or fake cable products. These suspicious products have then been collected and distributed amongst Prysmian and other ACI members for rigorous lab testing.
As a result, it has been discovered that the manufacturers of these sub-standard and fake cables cut corners and costs in different ways, including producing under sized conductors and using copper clad aluminium and PVC instead of Insudite or fire resistant insulation.
The consequences of installing such cables can be severe. If the conductor overheats during use, the insulation and sheath fall apart and can then catch fire. One particularly bad cable tested claimed to pass the three hour fire test. In actual fact it barely got to one minute before total failure! It is precisely these types of products the ACI has been set up to reduce and eliminate. The ACI aims are clear; to communicate, educate and raise awareness of unsafe, non-approved and fake cables in the UK. Prysmian and the ACI’s efforts are fully focused on eliminating these risks and providing the marketplace with products that perform as intended in their applications.
These aims have gained support from many quarters, including Government. Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, Energy and Climate Change Secretary Chris Huhne and MP for Wrexham Ian Lucas all took time out from their busy pre-election campaigning to support the ACI by visiting Prysmian plants in Wrexham and Eastleigh.
